Snowman Costume DIY: Easy Build From White Clothes

6 min read ยท The Costume Rack

The easiest snowman costume DIY is an all-white outfit with three big black buttons down the front, a bright scarf, a dark hat and an orange "carrot" nose. Cut the buttons from felt and pin them on, wrap the scarf, and either paint the nose or make a little cone from orange card. No sewing, and you're done in under an hour.

Got white clothes but no idea how to make them look like more than "laundry day"? The Costume Rack splits a look into pieces and shows a version of each from what you already own. Start my costume

Most snowman costume ideas online are written for little kids. This one is for teens, uni students and adults, so it looks cute, stays warm and doesn't involve stuffing yourself with pillows (unless you want to).

What you need

White base from your closet

You don't need everything to match. Different whites and creams look like real snow, which is lumpy and uneven anyway.

A cream cable knit, light jeans and the scarf. Pin the buttons on and you're festive but office-appropriate.

Not much white? A light grey hoodie works. The buttons and scarf are what make people say "snowman."

Buttons and scarf

Felt buttons (snowman costume DIY no sew)

  1. Draw three circles about 3 inches across on black felt. A mug is a perfect template.
  2. Cut them out. Felt doesn't fray, so no hemming.
  3. Safety-pin them down the center front, evenly spaced, from chest to belly.
  4. Add a fourth if you're tall.

No felt? Black card works for one night, or use black duct tape cut into circles stuck straight onto a puffer.

Want it 3D? Use black pom-poms or plastic lids from a takeout container, painted black, with a pin glued to the back.

The scarf

Wrap it once round your neck and let both ends hang down the front, slightly to one side. Red, green or stripes all work. A chunky knit looks best in photos.

Hat and nose

DIY snowman hat

Beanie: a black beanie is the cozy, easy version. Pin a small sprig of holly or a red ribbon round it.

Paper top hat:

  1. Roll black card into a tube that fits your head, and tape it.
  2. Trace the tube onto more black card, then draw a circle about 2 inches wider round it for the brim.
  3. Cut out the brim with a hole in the middle, cut slits on the inside of the tube's bottom edge, fold them out and glue them under the brim.
  4. Glue a circle on top. Add a red ribbon band.

It takes 25 minutes and looks great in photos.

Snowman nose DIY

Pop little black dots across your cheek in a smile shape with eyeliner if you want the coal smile. Optional, adorable.

If you're stuck deciding between paint and no paint, or hat and no hat, that's normal. The Costume Rack asks how you feel about face paint and how much you've already got, and every costume it builds has a no-makeup version. Start my costume

FAQ

How do you make a snowman costume homemade with no sewing?

Wear white clothes, cut three black felt circles and safety-pin them down the front, then add a scarf, a dark hat and an orange nose. Pins and tape do all the work, and everything comes off cleanly afterwards.

What can a teen girl wear for a snowman costume?

A white sweater dress or a white hoodie with a tennis skirt and white tights. Add felt buttons, a red scarf and a beanie. Cream or off-white pieces mixed together look great.

How do you make a DIY snowman hat?

A black beanie is the quick version. For a top hat, roll black card into a tube, glue on a brim and a top, and add a red ribbon. It takes about 25 minutes.

Can you do a snowman costume without makeup?

Yes. Skip the nose paint and pin a small orange felt carrot to your scarf instead. The white outfit, buttons and scarf already make it clear.

Is a snowman costume warm enough for an outdoor event?

It can be one of the warmest costumes there is. Use a white puffer as the body, layer thermals underneath, and add mittens and earmuffs.

Put your group on one rail so nobody turns up as the same thing, and build each costume piece by piece from your own vibe and what you already own.
