Why wings flop

Before choosing a method, it helps to know what goes wrong. Wings droop or twist for four reasons:

1. The anchor is too low. Wings attached at the waist tip backward.
2. The anchor is too small. One pin or one clip lets them spin.
3. The straps are too loose. Loose elastic lets the whole set sag.
4. The wings are front-heavy or bottom-heavy. Big feathered tips pull downward.

Make a center plate first

Whatever method you use, glue your two wings to a plate: a rectangle of cardboard or craft foam about 5 x 7 inches. The plate spreads the weight and gives straps something to hold. Cover it with fabric or paint it to match your top.

Elastic backpack straps

What you need

• About 1 yard of wide (1 inch) elastic
• Hot glue or duct tape
• Safety pins for fitting

Steps

1. Cut two lengths of elastic, each about 20 inches for an adult. You will trim later.
2. Glue the top end of each strap to the upper corners of the center plate.
3. Loop each strap over a shoulder and under the arm, like a backpack.
4. Pin the bottom ends to the lower corners of the plate to test the fit.
5. Adjust until snug but comfortable, then glue or tape the ends down and trim.

For extra hold, add a small cross strap across your chest, connecting the two straps.

Hiding the straps

• Wear a top in the same color as the elastic.
• Use clear bra straps for light wings.
• Wrap the straps in ribbon, tulle or faux feathers so they look like part of the costume.

Hidden harness under a top

For large angel wings or anything with real feathers, straps alone may not be enough. A hidden harness goes underneath your clothes, with only a small mount poking through.

How it works

1. Make the backpack straps as above, but attach them to a plate that sits against your skin or undershirt.
2. Glue a short, sturdy tab (a strip of cardboard or a flat plastic ruler) to the plate so it points backward.
3. Put your top on over the harness, cut or open a small slit at the back, and push the tab through.
4. Attach the wings to the tab with strong clips, velcro or duct tape.

Clips and safety pins for light wings

1. Put the hoodie on a chair back so it keeps its shape.
2. Hold the wings where they look right, high between the shoulders.

Wings are great standing up and miserable in a car seat. A few fixes:

• Make them detachable. Velcro or clips let you take the wings off in the car and put them back on at the door.
• Angle them up. Wings that point up and out clear the back of a chair better than ones that hang down.
• Pad the plate. Glue a piece of felt or foam to the side that touches your back.
• Keep them narrow for crowded parties. Doorways and hallways are the real enemy.
